The Roof You Stopped Looking At

Why a Weathered Sheet Is the Problem
Asbestos cement is stable while it stays in one piece. The fibres are locked into the cement and they go nowhere. Crack a brittle, weathered sheet though, or snap one trying to lever it off the frame, and it lets go of fibres far too fine to see. Breathed in, they sit in the lungs for decades and can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, often 20 to 40 years after the day you disturbed them. A garage roof that has been baking and freezing since the 1970s is exactly the kind of material that breaks rather than bends, and the surface that once shed rain neatly turns chalky and fragile with age.
The danger is rarely the roof as it stands. It is what people do with it. A homeowner drags an old sheet off to fix a leak, drops it, and it shatters on the drive. Someone takes an angle grinder to a bolt, or jet-washes the moss off, or stacks broken pieces in the corner of the garden for months. Each of those is a quiet release of fibres into air the household goes on breathing. A Single-Garage Job, Start to Finish

A pitched roof can take tiles to match the house where the garage sits in full view of the street, and asbestos-free fibre cement gives you the old corrugated look without anything underneath to worry about.
Not every job needs a full strip, either. Where a sheet is sound and genuinely hard to remove, boxing it out, sealing and covering the material rather than taking it away, can be the sensible route. For an exposed garage roof that takes the full force of the weather a complete clearance is usually the cleaner long-term answer, and we will tell you honestly which makes more sense for your building rather than pushing the bigger job.
