Why old floors hide asbestos in Chelsea

Most of the time nobody goes looking for these tiles. They turn up in the middle of a job. A kitchen is being torn out in a mansion block, or a hallway and reception floor are being levelled before new boards or stone go down, and once the top covering comes away the old tiles and their glue are sitting there.
At that point the safe move is to stop and have the material sampled rather than chip on through it. A small piece goes to a UKAS-accredited laboratory and the result comes back in a few working days. If it is positive, the tiles and the bitumen below them are treated as asbestos and removed properly, not scraped up dry by whoever is on site.
Pulling the tiles is the straightforward part. The adhesive is the slow part. It has to be taken back from the screed under control, because dry scraping and grinding is exactly what sends fibre into the air of a room people are about to live and cook in.
Keeping fibres out of an occupied flat
