Why is asbestos so harmful?
There are four main diseases linked to breathing in asbestos: non-malignant pleural disease; asbestosis (non-malignant scarring of the lung tissue); asbestos-related lung cancer; and mesothelioma – a form of cancer mainly affecting the lining of the lungs.
If you suspect your building has ACM (asbestos-containing materials), it’s important to have it checked before you have a refurbishment. Once disturbed, asbestos is released into the air and can cause problems to your health over the long-term.
Common ACMs that could be found in your home in Teddington include roof slates and rainwater goods, roof felts, soffit boards, window panels, window boards, ceiling and wall panels, and stippled ceiling finish (Artex).
You can also find it in toilet cisterns and bath panels, vinyl floor tiles and black adhesive, asbestos-backed lino, old electrical equipment, and heating systems.
