Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral that was once heavily used as a building material. There are six main types of asbestos, these are:
- Chrysotile
- Actinolite
- Amosite
- Anthophyllite
- Crocidolite
- Tremolite
If the asbestos fibres become airborne, then you can breathe them in. This can cause the fibres to be lodged in the lung tissue, damaging the lungs and causing various cancers and diseases.
In 1999 asbestos was officially banned for use in the UK. Since then, buying, selling, importing, and exporting materials containing asbestos has been illegal.
Asbestos causes no harm if it is left undamaged and untouched. If building works or removals are taking place in the area where you think asbestos might be, that could cause a risk by disturbing it. This is when you would need to contact Clearaway Asbestos.
